"Everything starts with one step, or one brick, or one word, or one day"

-Jeremy Gilley

The definition of true craftsmanship goes beyond mere construction; it embodies a deep respect for artistry and meticulous attention to detail. It all starts with one foundational element. Every brick, paver, and stone has its designated place, meticulously chosen to ensure both functionality and beauty. We have the ability to create stunning patio areas using a diverse range of materials, including pavers, durable stone or flagstone, as well as natural options like gravel, sand, and rock. The best part is that the vast majority of the materials we use are sourced right here in Minnesota, reflecting the local character and enhancing the connection to our beautiful surroundings.

What does it involve?

Any patio construction necessitates a certain degree of excavation to ensure that there is a solid and proper base beneath it. The specific requirements can vary depending on the unique conditions of each project, but it generally involves an excavation depth of about 12 inches. This process includes compacting the existing soil to create a stable foundation, after which a fabric underlayment is rolled out to enhance stability. The area is then filled with either class 2 or 5 gravel, crushed concrete, or rock, which must be compacted thoroughly using a jumping jack compactor. During this stage, we also take the opportunity to install any necessary drainage pipes or conduits—whether for gas, electric, or potential future add-ons—to ensure everything is in place before we proceed further. Once the base is effectively prepared, we meticulously fine-tune and screed the base material, followed by running a plate compactor over it to compress the surface evenly. After achieving a solid foundation, we screed out a layer of 3/4" to 1" of fine bedding material, typically fine granite sand, which serves as the perfect surface for laying pavers or stone. Once the patio material is laid down and any cutting is completed to fit the design, we move on to installing edging around the perimeter of the patio to keep everything securely locked in place. Finally, we sweep sand into the joints between the pavers; for paver patios, we lightly vibrate the sand into those joints to enhance stability, and conclude by completing any necessary dirt work along the patio's edges, ensuring a finished and polished look.

How does it work?

To initiate the process, I will personally visit the site to conduct a thorough assessment alongside the client. During this visit, I will take the time to carefully examine the area, gather any necessary measurements, and capture a few pictures that may be useful for the project. Once we have a clear understanding of the site, I will sit down with the client to discuss their specific wants, needs, and any concerns they may have regarding the project. This collaborative discussion is vital to ensure that everyone is on the same page. Following our meeting, I will then compile a comprehensive proposal, and if needed, I will create a preliminary design that reflects the client’s vision. We will schedule another meeting to review all aspects of the proposal and design together, making any adjustments as necessary to align with the client's expectations. If the client feels comfortable and is ready to commit to the project at that point, we can proceed to discuss payment options while also locking down an approximate start date and a projected timeline for the project’s duration. Typically, we require a deposit of one-third of the projected total amount to secure a spot in our schedule before any work begins, with the remaining balance due upon the project’s completion. This structured approach helps ensure a smooth and efficient process from start to finish.
